A man at home in the wilderness

peter-tuckerThe epitome of free the spirit of Freshwater Cove is the man who runs it, Peter “Tux” Tucker. You don’t need to know Tux for very long before you’ll realise that the Kimberley infests his DNA, for almost every breath he’s drawn and everything he’s eaten and most of what he’s seen for the past 22 years is in and of this special part of the planet.

Tux is as close to the Kimberley as anyone you’re going to meet. He spent 7 years, between 1986 and 1992 living with the Bardi People of the distant tip of Dampier Peninsula and on the Buccaneer Archipelago. For the past 13 years, he has been living and working closely with the Worrworra people of the west Kimberley coast and it’s on their ancestral lands where you’ll find Freshwater Cove.

Fishing, fame and family

Also in Tux’s DNA is a gene or two for fishing. Coming from a large Italian family who plied their trade of fishing in Victoria, Tux has gone on to fish in many parts of the planet. At Freshwater Cove, he’s hosted some of the great fishing celebrities, who queue up to visit, assisted Sir David Attenborough in the BBC production “8 Wonders of the natural world”, has featured in fishing, tourism and lifestyle magazines from all over and through it all, his thirst for experiencing the essence of nature, his vast knowledge of bushcraft, his love of dining on freshly gathered seafood and his expertise with rod, line and lure shine through and will compliment your Freshwater Cove adventure.

When not at the Cove, Tux can be found in his home in Broome with wife Michiyo and three children. He has the same passion for his family that he holds for the wilderness and this rubs off on the way that he runs Freshwater Cove. When you visit, you’ll quickly realise that you’ve been welcomed into an extended family.

You owe it to yourself to experience this special part of the planet and to share your time there with a man of the knowledge, character, style and enthusiasms of Tux. And when the time comes to return to the city again, you’ll discover something that many who visit Freshwater Cove find: that you’ll be taking a little bit of Tux with you and your life will never be the same.
